iPhone 17 Wireless Charging Gets 50W Boost
iPhone 17 wireless charging could see a major upgrade with support for up to 50W speeds, according to new regulatory filings. Apple is reportedly developing next-generation MagSafe chargers that support the upcoming Qi2.2 standard, significantly improving wireless charging performance for future iPhones.
New MagSafe Chargers Designed for Speed
Two new MagSafe chargers are reportedly under development with subtle improvements over the existing models. While the chargers are visually similar to the current versions, they feature braided cables available in one-metre and two-metre lengths. These updated models are designed to support higher output and are optimized for the Qi2.2 standard.
What Is Qi2.2 and Why It Matters for iPhone 17
Qi2.2 is the latest wireless charging standard expected to deliver up to 50W of power output. With better magnetic alignment and energy efficiency, Qi2.2 significantly enhances wireless charging speed and performance. The iPhone 17 is expected to fully leverage these benefits, offering a new benchmark in wireless charging convenience and speed.
Backward Compatibility Still in Play
Although the iPhone 17 is likely to benefit the most from these new chargers, users with older iPhones—ranging from the iPhone 11 to the iPhone 16 series—can still use the new MagSafe accessories. However, charging speeds on those devices may be limited based on their hardware compatibility.
A Leap From Current Wireless Charging Speeds
At present, MagSafe chargers support wireless charging speeds of up to 15W on standard Qi2 and 25W on select models using a 30W adapter. With Qi2.2 and the new MagSafe hardware, iPhone 17 users could experience charging speeds nearly double the current limit, making wireless charging a much more viable primary option.
